School Daze

Yesterday morning as I was preparing for the day, I began watching School Daze, written, directed, and starring the one and only Spike Lee. It is one of my all time favorite movies, having been filmed in 1987. I first saw it...oh, well I can't remember. But what I do remember is that alot of the more poignant issues which made the movie so "profound" flew right over my head. Now that I am older and have opened my eyes to the world, the movie has become (oh how do I say)- it has become somewhat of a personal favorite. But anyway, below is a list of things that stuck out to me that I did not quite catch and also some things that you may not have known about the movie that is only available on the 20th Anniversay DVD:
  • Tisha Campbell was only 18 and got the lead role. She suffered alot of "hate" because she was the youngest cast member and also the lead.
  •  None of the darker skinned brothers (i.e. Kadeem Hardison) were required to audition. In contrast, all the light skinned brothers (i.e. Bill Morrison) did have to audition.
  • In an effort to create a true stigma of "light skinned is better than dark" amongst the female cast, Spike put all the fair skinned ladies in more accomodating suites and placed the brown skinned babes in "shabby accomodations".
  • The very first time that Tisha was ever called the "N-word" was during the filming of the movie, which was shot in Atlanta, GA, originally on Morehouse College's campus and finished on Brown's campus.
  • The officials at Morehouse College were enraged at the use of the N-word, and other language and the portrayal of blacks, so they kicked them off campus and the party moved to Brown.
  • Morris Chestnut's room in the end is not the same room as it was in the beggining because of this.
  • The fight during the step show in the movie was an actual fight. It started because Tisha had her hair pulled and one of the other cast members, I forgot his name, who was a Gamma say it and got mad and started to run on stage and that's how the fight began.
  • Alot of the screen shots were exxagerated to enusre that the idealisms would reach the viewers.
  • Um, what else?
I think that is all I have for right now.
